Cervantine

Vinyl: $17.21 Buy

MP3 Album: $11.49 Download

Vinyl LP pressing. 2011 release from the Albuquerque-based Indie outfit. Cervantine is a record that gloriously connects their deep fascination with the Folk and gypsy groups of former Yugoslavia, Greece and Romania with their actual home in the desert plains of the American Southwest. The group's natural blend of diverse global musical styles with their Indie Rock background lends them the kind of cross-audience appeal enjoyed by bands including Fools Gold, Beirut and Calexico, while their strong sense of musicality and cultural context draws more left-field listeners to them as well. Recorded live at their studio in Albuquerque between two US tours, Cervantine is the vibrant sound of an American band whose geographical and cultural travels bear on their already distinctive music.

Finally, after over a month of unanswered emails and text messages, blown deadlines, and pleas to finish and turn in their new album, last week, a large brown cardboard box showed up at the Dead Oceans doorstep. Upon miraculous resuscitation of the original AKAK hard drive, the album layers thousands of minute imperceptible samples of their first recordings with fuzzed-out representations of their present beings to induce pleasant emotional feeling states and many momentary transcendent inspirations. This album is titled S/T II: The Cosmic Birth and Journey of Shinju TNT.

US LP release. 2008 release of Another World by Antony and the Johnsons. Angel-voiced transvestite songwriter Antony, backed by his band the Johnsons, garnered both critical praise and a surprising amount of commercial recognition following his 2005 breakthrough I Am a Bird Now. His emotionally stark, soulful ballads are genuinely affecting and have made devoted fans out of Lou Reed and Boy George, among others. Antony took home the U.K.'s esteemed Mercury Prize in 2005.

The follow-up to I AM a BIRD NOW shifts thematic focus and explores Antony's relationship with the natural world. The intimacy of the Johnsons' sound is enveloped by avant-classical composer Nico Muhly's symphonic arrangements.

Favourite Worst Nightmare [Vinyl]

Vinyl: $19.21 UNAVAILABLE

MP3 Album: $9.99 Download

The Arctic Monkeys surely showed potential on their debut Whatever People Say I Am, but their youthful vigor often camouflaged their debt to other bands. Here on their sophomore album Favourite Worst Nightmare, they're absorbing their influences, turning their liberal borrowings from the Libertines, the Strokes, and the Jam into something that's their own distinct identity. Unlike any of those three bands, however, the Arctic Monkeys haven't stumbled on their second album; they haven't choked on hubris, they haven't overthought their sophomore salvo, nor have they cranked it out too quickly. That constant year of work resulted in startling growth as the band is testing the limits of what they can do and where they can go. The remarkable thing about the Arctic Monkeys -- which Favourite Worst Nightmare brings into sharp relief -- is their genuine guilelessness, how they restructure classic rock clichés in a way that pays little mind to how things were done in the past, and that all goes back to their youth.

In 2011, the original three members of Ben Folds Five came together to record three new studio tracks for The Best Imitation Of Myself: A Retrospective, a career-spanning Ben Folds anthology. With the band's magic rekindled while making the new tracks, Ben Folds Five gave its first concert in more than a decade to a spellbound audience at New York s Mountain Jam Festival on June 2, 2012. Now, Ben Folds Five return with The Sound Of The Life Of The Mind, the group's first album of new music in 13 years.

Favorite psych-and-prog-spiritual pioneers are back with their second full-length. It resonates with the same epic ring, beloved deep rock touchstones, and genuine folk fragility that made their self-titled debut an instant classic. "In the Future" possesses immense breadth, seamlessly showcasing short and classic folk-pop gems along with driving modern rock masterpieces, peaking with "Bright Lights", a 17-minute multi-dimensional opus that gives Pink Floyd's "Echoes" a run for it's money.

On the heels of three well-received singles comes Ride Your Heart, the bombastic debut album by LA band Bleached. Sisters Jennifer and Jessie Clavin match their ability to blend a mix of freewheeling '77 punk with vintage sunny Southern California melodic rock and roll; creating blindingly bright hooks and dark heartfelt lyrics about love, loss, and the crazy fun moments in between.

UK vinyl LP pressing. 2009 debut album from the British Alt-Pop band, a beautifully literate and ambitious release. From the dizzying MBV/M83 swoops and morning-after ruefulness of the LP's opening song to the open-tuned, Appalachian folk feel of the record's closing track, the album thrums with subtle invention and quiet emotional intensity. Fans of Bloc Party, Broken Social Scene and Bon Iver will be utterly beguiled. Indie Rock rarely gets to enjoy it's innocence these days, but Bombay Bicycle Club knows that's exactly what makes it precious. Jamie and Jack formed Bombay Bicycle Club after spending their early teens trying to sneak into 18+ gigs together. They were dissuaded at first by Jamie's guitar playing Dad, Neill MacColl (son of Ewan, sister of Kirsty), who once told Jack he should become a plumber rather than a musician if he ever wanted to make a decent living. Then Neill heard the astonishing cache of songs Jack had amassed in his bedroom with Garageband and a cheap guitar, and instantly changed his mind, offering to produce Bombay Bicycle Club's first demos. Flaws

Vinyl: $30.78 UNAVAILABLE

MP3 Album: $8.99 Download

UK vinyl LP pressing. 2010 release, a stunningly beautiful acoustic album by Bombay Bicycle Club. Having finished recording their debut LP I Had the Blues But I Shook Them Loose in February 2009, the band went straight back into the studio days after they submitted the master for I Had the Blues, and started the initial recordings for this album. Recorded in between touring over the past year and a half, a few early tracks were laid down at the Church and produced by Neill MacColl (guitarist Jamie's dad), but the rest was recorded in singer, Jack Steadman's bedroom and produced by Jack himself. Flaws is characterized by a delicate, heart-swelling beauty and lightness of touch throughout. This more stripped down, acoustic sound - though markedly different from the majority of their debut - isn't new for the band, as almost every single they've released since their earliest days has been accompanied by an acoustic b-side.

The third album from the British Alt-Roc/Pop band. Recorded in Hamburg, London and Atlanta, a Different Kind of Fix sees the guitars firmly plugged back in for album number three, but added to the mix are synths, sampled loops, layered vocals from all four band members and washes of reverb throughout. Production-wise, the album reunites BBC with Jim Abbiss-who produced their debut-and also introduces them to Ben Allen (noted for his work with Animal Collective) whilst lead singer, Jack Steadman co-produces throughout. Includes first single, "Shuffle", "How Can You Swallow So Much Sleep" and "Take the Right One". Island. NO Autograph

War Room Stories [Vinyl]

Vinyl: $21.21 Buy

MP3 Album: $7.99 Download

2014 release, the much anticipated second album from the British Indie band. War Room Stories was written during a year spent touring incessantly and playing festivals across the world. It was recorded this summer at the Funkhaus in Berlin - a building with the same otherworldly weirdness as Breton's beloved creative HQ, The Lab in south London, which was demolished last summer to make way for luxury flats. Breton also employed the services of the Macedonian Radio Symphonic Orchestra who appear on five tracks throughout the album. The band recorded the tracks earmarked for orchestration on a laptop, translated them into sheet music and flew to Macedonia where the 44 piece orchestra then played them live in the studio. The stunning results can be heard on 'Envy', 'Closed Category', 'Legs and Arms', 'S Four' and 'War Room Stories'.

"Dennen's soulful album is a folk rock revelation... if you're one of those Paul Simon fans who wish he'd return to 'Graceland' already, we've found just the tune for you. But it isn't exactly a 'Graceland' tribute; there are also shades of Joni Mitchell and James Taylor. And the meditative 'I Asked When' is a positively Dylan-esque protest song" - Washington Post. "The dude has a gift for hooks. But unlike Gavin DeGraw or Jason Mraz, Dennen has something to say, putting him closer to skilled songsmiths like Jeff Tweedy and Ray LaMontagne, who also combine seductive voices with relatable premises. Dennen's finely nuanced record gets more captivating with each listen" - Paste.

The first of what promises to be many posthumous solo albums from Calvin Johnson, culled from the extensive archive of tapes left behind by the prolific songmaker and performer. Calvin Johnson made up songs about the feeling inside for over twenty years. What Was Me collects ten bits of lifeness and spreads them thickly with voice and acoustic guitar; a capella 40% of the time. There are patches that are worn and threadbare but the overall effect is gutty and moist. The affect is also noteworthy. Calvin is joined by the K divas Mirah on "Ode to St. Valentine" and Beth Ditto (the Gossip) on "Lightnin' Rod for Jesus".

Their Secretly Canadian debut is one hell of a break-up record. Love is a confusing thing and it always leaves the mind with more questions than answers. "Tell Me" captures the confusion, denial, sleepless nights, and the desperate pleas for love that can only be felt when the mind gives up control to the heart. Catfish Haven are amongst the few bands that can command a stage; keep a crowd up with a high energy live performance and still deliver such heartache.

The Cave Singers spend a good deal of time beyond the darkened edges of Seattle, in the mist and mystic, among the wolves and redwoods. And their songs, at least on record, have always been like beautiful, faded grayscale photos of this hinterland. Now, these photos are injected with hot blood and Technicolor, a ferocity and bite we've yet to see from the band. No Witch is a new found sheen to the aura that made the Cave Singers' music so special to begin with.

Rapprocher

Brooklyn's Class Actress put forth their debut long player, RAPPROCHER. The album sees front person Elizabeth Harper pushing the songs into new directions. Harper remains the force that binds the songs into a cohesive statement, her winking coo darting about in the deep drums and lofty arpeggios, and her passion, backed mostly with electronics, summons thoughts of Yaz's Alison Moyet. In concurrence with the title ('rapprocher' is French for 'bring closer'), the candid sincere lyrics meld with the atmosphere, enveloping the listener into Class Actress's world of 21st century romanticism.

Their third release represents another stride onward from previous works, where the girls continue to experiment with their disparate voices and clashing personalities, juxtaposing devastating ballads like "Werewolf" with exhilarating tracks like "Japan" and the jaunty single "Rainbowarriors". Saint Bartlett opens up with a grandiosity yet unheard on a Damien Jurado album. It strips away the many layers of paint from the house down the street, the one Jurado has occupied for the last decade, and goes to work liberally applying an exhilarating new coat, making the whole neighborhood shine in the process! Mellotrons swell, heavenly handclaps ring in stereo and big drums create a sky for the songs to fly in. Produced by fellow Secretly Canadian artist Richard Swift, his 'Spector-esque' production is spot-on, a production that positions Damien Jurado not as a folk singer but as a mystic - somewhere between Van Morrison, Scott Walker and Wayne Coyne. Saint Bartlett was made entirely at Swift's National Freedom studio in Oregon, in just under a week with only Jurado and Swift as the performers.
