Cervantine

Vinyl: $17.21 Buy

MP3 Album: $11.49 Download

Vinyl LP pressing. 2011 release from the Albuquerque-based Indie outfit. Cervantine is a record that gloriously connects their deep fascination with the Folk and gypsy groups of former Yugoslavia, Greece and Romania with their actual home in the desert plains of the American Southwest. The group's natural blend of diverse global musical styles with their Indie Rock background lends them the kind of cross-audience appeal enjoyed by bands including Fools Gold, Beirut and Calexico, while their strong sense of musicality and cultural context draws more left-field listeners to them as well. Recorded live at their studio in Albuquerque between two US tours, Cervantine is the vibrant sound of an American band whose geographical and cultural travels bear on their already distinctive music.

Finally, after over a month of unanswered emails and text messages, blown deadlines, and pleas to finish and turn in their new album, last week, a large brown cardboard box showed up at the Dead Oceans doorstep. Upon miraculous resuscitation of the original AKAK hard drive, the album layers thousands of minute imperceptible samples of their first recordings with fuzzed-out representations of their present beings to induce pleasant emotional feeling states and many momentary transcendent inspirations. This album is titled S/T II: The Cosmic Birth and Journey of Shinju TNT.

Favourite Worst Nightmare [Vinyl]

Vinyl: $21.21 UNAVAILABLE

MP3 Album: $9.99 Download

The Arctic Monkeys surely showed potential on their debut Whatever People Say I Am, but their youthful vigor often camouflaged their debt to other bands. Here on their sophomore album Favourite Worst Nightmare, they're absorbing their influences, turning their liberal borrowings from the Libertines, the Strokes, and the Jam into something that's their own distinct identity. Unlike any of those three bands, however, the Arctic Monkeys haven't stumbled on their second album; they haven't choked on hubris, they haven't overthought their sophomore salvo, nor have they cranked it out too quickly. That constant year of work resulted in startling growth as the band is testing the limits of what they can do and where they can go. The remarkable thing about the Arctic Monkeys -- which Favourite Worst Nightmare brings into sharp relief -- is their genuine guilelessness, how they restructure classic rock clichés in a way that pays little mind to how things were done in the past, and that all goes back to their youth.

Wilderness Heart, the new album by Black Mountain, is packed with succinct rock songs that pulse and pound with startling precision: it pummels you and you ask for more. This is arguably the band's tightest, most concentrated venture, but there's still plenty of raw rock energy at work. "It's our most metal and most folk oriented record so far," songwriter Stephen McBean says. "I'm not gonna say it's our best record or the album that we always dreamt of making 'cause that's what everyone says. It's all about where we were at the time the machines were rolling.

Flaws

Vinyl: $30.78 Buy

MP3 Album: $8.99 Download

UK vinyl LP pressing. 2010 release, a stunningly beautiful acoustic album by Bombay Bicycle Club. Having finished recording their debut LP I Had the Blues But I Shook Them Loose in February 2009, the band went straight back into the studio days after they submitted the master for I Had the Blues, and started the initial recordings for this album. Recorded in between touring over the past year and a half, a few early tracks were laid down at the Church and produced by Neill MacColl (guitarist Jamie's dad), but the rest was recorded in singer, Jack Steadman's bedroom and produced by Jack himself. Flaws is characterized by a delicate, heart-swelling beauty and lightness of touch throughout. This more stripped down, acoustic sound - though markedly different from the majority of their debut - isn't new for the band, as almost every single they've released since their earliest days has been accompanied by an acoustic b-side.

Recorded in Hamburg, London and Atlanta, a Different Kind of Fix sees the guitars firmly plugged back in for album number three, but added to the mix are synths, sampled loops, layered vocals from all four band members and washes of reverb throughout. Production-wise, the album reunites BBC with Jim Abbiss-who produced their debut-and also introduces them to Ben Allen (noted for his work with Animal Collective) whilst lead singer, Jack Steadman co-produces throughout. Includes first single, "Shuffle", "How Can You Swallow So Much Sleep" and "Take the Right One". Island. NO Autograph

Bon Iver's Bon Iver is Justin Vernon returning to former haunts with a new spirit. The reprises are there – solitude, quietude, hope and desperation compressed – but always a rhythm arises, a pulse vivified by gratitude and grace notes. War Room Stories [Vinyl]

Vinyl: $21.21 Buy

MP3 Album: $7.99 Download

2014 release, the much anticipated second album from the British Indie band. War Room Stories was written during a year spent touring incessantly and playing festivals across the world. It was recorded this summer at the Funkhaus in Berlin - a building with the same otherworldly weirdness as Breton's beloved creative HQ, The Lab in south London, which was demolished last summer to make way for luxury flats. Breton also employed the services of the Macedonian Radio Symphonic Orchestra who appear on five tracks throughout the album. The band recorded the tracks earmarked for orchestration on a laptop, translated them into sheet music and flew to Macedonia where the 44 piece orchestra then played them live in the studio. The stunning results can be heard on 'Envy', 'Closed Category', 'Legs and Arms', 'S Four' and 'War Room Stories'.

"Dennen's soulful album is a folk rock revelation... if you're one of those Paul Simon fans who wish he'd return to 'Graceland' already, we've found just the tune for you. But it isn't exactly a 'Graceland' tribute; there are also shades of Joni Mitchell and James Taylor. And the meditative 'I Asked When' is a positively Dylan-esque protest song" - Washington Post. "The dude has a gift for hooks. But unlike Gavin DeGraw or Jason Mraz, Dennen has something to say, putting him closer to skilled songsmiths like Jeff Tweedy and Ray LaMontagne, who also combine seductive voices with relatable premises. Dennen's finely nuanced record gets more captivating with each listen" - Paste.

The first of what promises to be many posthumous solo albums from Calvin Johnson, culled from the extensive archive of tapes left behind by the prolific songmaker and performer. Calvin Johnson made up songs about the feeling inside for over twenty years. What Was Me collects ten bits of lifeness and spreads them thickly with voice and acoustic guitar; a capella 40% of the time. There are patches that are worn and threadbare but the overall effect is gutty and moist. The affect is also noteworthy. Calvin is joined by the K divas Mirah on "Ode to St. Valentine" and Beth Ditto (the Gossip) on "Lightnin' Rod for Jesus".

The Cave Singers spend a good deal of time beyond the darkened edges of Seattle, in the mist and mystic, among the wolves and redwoods. Saint Bartlett opens up with a grandiosity yet unheard on a Damien Jurado album. It strips away the many layers of paint from the house down the street, the one Jurado has occupied for the last decade, and goes to work liberally applying an exhilarating new coat, making the whole neighborhood shine in the process! Mellotrons swell, heavenly handclaps ring in stereo and big drums create a sky for the songs to fly in. Produced by fellow Secretly Canadian artist Richard Swift, his 'Spector-esque' production is spot-on, a production that positions Damien Jurado not as a folk singer but as a mystic - somewhere between Van Morrison, Scott Walker and Wayne Coyne. Saint Bartlett was made entirely at Swift's National Freedom studio in Oregon, in just under a week with only Jurado and Swift as the performers.

Banhart co-produced the record with his longtime bandmate, guitarist Noah Georgeson. Mala was recorded in his then-home in Los Angeles. He and Georgeson played most of the instruments themselves, using borrowed equipment and a vintage Tascam recorder they d found in a pawn shop. "A lot of early Hip Hop had been made on [the Tascam], " says Banhart. "And knowing my songs are not Hip Hop whatsoever, we thought it would be interesting to see how these kinds of songs would sound on equipment that was used to record our favorite Rap. Let's see how this technology would work for us. " It was a new approach for the pair. "In the past we were more like, let's use the oldest equipment we could find. " Banhart's previous release, 2009's What Will We Be, received critical acclaim, with Rolling Stone calling it "the best he's ever made. "

As one of the principal songwriters in MMOSS, Tuttle was integral in honing that band's signature sound of West Coast bummer harmonies wrapped taut around a sinewy and dreamy collision of hazy Psychedelia and motorik Krautrock. As the band dissolved, Tuttle began writing his way through the haze. There is definitely a bittersweet narrative going on throughout the record but with the strength of every single track the listener becomes the willing accomplice. Tuttle deftly forges a sound that all his, weaving nebulous jams into masterfully crafted pop gems. There is also heavy introspection here leading one to consider other artists who were terrific as the member of a band but that really excelled when they began releasing material under their own name.
